Multiple people have been killed in a shooting in a Dollar General store on Kings Road in Jacksonville, not far from Edward Waters University.
Mayor Donna Deegan told News4Jax, a Jacksonville Today news partner, that there were “a number of fatalities” in the shooting Saturday in Northwest Jacksonville.
“This is unacceptable,” Deegan said. “One shooting is too much, but these mass shootings are really hard to take.”
Edward Waters issued an alert saying that all campus facilities were secured. Students were being kept in their residence halls through the afternoon.
The university said preliminary reports indicated no students, faculty or staff were involved.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office planned a news conference later in the day. No details had been released about the gunman, the number of victims or the circumstances of the shooting.
City Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman, who was on the scene, expressed sadness and anger.
““I’m tired of seeing all the shootings,” Pittman said. “The people in this community are hurting.”
The shooting occurred on the fifth anniversary of a mass shooting at Jacksonville Landing that killed three people, including the shooter.
